One activity that every one of us is doing at least one a day, or maybe twice or thrice, is brushing the teeth.
The quality of the toothpaste is very important for the overall health. You don’t want to put every day in your mouth the ingredients that are used in the commercial brands. So, you can make your own toothpaste in order to get the best ingredients possible.
- Common Undesirable Ingredients
The ingredients found in the toothpastes can scary you. The following ingredients are just a few of the most popular.
Are you wondering why the label says “If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, contact a Poison Control Center right away or get medical help”? Or why there is a recommendation to keep the toothpaste out of reach of children.
Or why most of the toothpaste for children are fluoride-free? That is because fluoride is toxic. Some studies have shown that the consumption of fluoride leads to lower intelligence, problems with thyroid function, high cancer risk, and many other medical conditions. And even if you are using a filter, it is in your water.
The aspartame is 100 times sweeter than sucrose, and it has been at the time of controversy since it hit the stores. The Aspartame is linked to brain damage between many other health conditions and problems.
The toothpaste usually comes in colors in order to make it more visually appealing to the customers. But these dyes can cause hyperactivity, allergies and can be carcinogenic.
Do-It-Yourself a natural toothpaste
8-10 drops of peppermint essential oil
1/4 cup virgin, unrefined coconut oil
1 tbs sweetener of your choice. You can use honey.
2 large tbs organic baking soda
Mix all of these ingredients together. The coconut oil should be stored at room temperature in order to mix it easily. If it is not, stir it with a spoon and it will loosen up. Blend everything very well and place the mixture in a container.
Make small portions of this toothpaste, because we are not sure what the shelf life would be. The coconut oil is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, so that should help.
Also, you can add some other natural flavors for a better taste. Share your experience if you have done something similar like this toothpaste.
