Democrats were working very hard to fundamentally ruin our elections. But Republicans struck back hard.
Liberals in D.C. were pushing a bill many thought was wrongly called “For the People Act.” This bill would have radically changed how our elections are conducted, giving far too much power to the federal government.
Among the many extreme changes the bill would have made was extending early voting and allowing anyone to use a utility bill to prove their identity.
If that sounds horrible, the bill only gets worse.
But thanks to 50 Republican senators, this bill will never become law.
From Fox News:
Republicans use filibuster to block debate on Democrats’ ‘rotten’ election reform bill
Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked sweeping legislation on election and campaign finance reforms that Democrats argued was crucial to ensuring voting rights and saving democracy but the GOP blasted as a partisan power grab.
The “For the People Act” needed 60 votes to clear a procedural vote in the Senate, but Republicans filibustered and killed the legislation from advancing to debate. No Republicans joined with the 50 Democrats on the motion to proceed.
This is a big reason why Democrats wanted to get rid of the filibuster. Thanks to that one rule, Republicans were able to kill a toxic bill that would have destroyed our elections.
Sen. Ted Cruz called the left’s bill the “Corrupt Politicians Act,” because it would give corrupt, incumbent politicians power to easily be re-elected.
The bill would take power reserved for the states and give it to D.C. It would have loosened many rules that actually keep elections secure.
And that’s all just for starters.
It’s hard to argue against what the Republicans claimed. That this bill was a power grab by Democrats.
It appears the left wanted to make so many changes to our democracy, and concerning inconsistencies would have become commonplace for every election.
There would be little states or anyone else could have done to properly ensure safe and fair elections.
Now, why would Democrats want to turn our elections into such a disaster? Perhaps it’s because it seems to help them win?
Because Democrats needed 60 votes to begin debate on this bill, Republicans were able to block it. All 50 Republicans in the Senate voted against it, while all 50 Democrats voted for it.
Are you glad Republicans flexed their power and stopped the Democrats?
