For the most part, Republicans and Democrats vote along party lines. That seems to be especially true of the current administration, where most Democrats refuse to break with leftist ideology.
The two sides tend to stick together, anyway, but partisan politics is dominating in D.C. right now. Few are willing to step over the party line because if they do, there could be consequences.
For instance, you might incur the wrath of President Joe Biden.
During a recent speech, POTUS talked about the “right to vote” and condemned those who are trying “to replace nonpartisan election administrators and to intimidate those charged with tallying and reporting election results.”
But then he decided to go after a couple fellow Democrats.
Biden didn’t call them by name but it’s widely assumed he was referring to Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ):
I hear all the folks on TV saying, ‘why doesn’t Biden get this done?’
Well, because Biden only has the majority of effectively four votes in the House and a tie in the Senate, with two members of the Senate who vote more with my Republican friends. But we’re not giving up.
Manchin especially is well known for standing against the Biden administration on several key issues. This includes saying “no” to the Democrat efforts to eliminate the filibuster rule.
As Manchin wrote in an article
Sinema is also against ditching the filibuster, according to one of her spokespeople.
Democrats have expressed frustrating at both Manchin and Sinema since Biden took office in January. To some leftist leaders, these two just aren’t toeing the line often enough.
Again, it isn’t clear if Biden was in fact referring to these two Senators. But it certainly makes the most sense, and it’s possible we’ll hear a response from either (or both) in the next few days.
Either way, Democrat in-fighting appears to be escalating. Several top lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have broken with “The Squad” on a number of issues, for example.
And some Democrat politicos have also railed against President Biden in regards to other issues, like the border situation and how he’s handling the pandemic.
It seems POTUS isn’t afraid to call them out for not siding with him, however.
